  • Seyi Vibez Unleashes Cinematic Brilliance In ‘Shaolin’ Music Video

Seyi Vibez Unleashes Cinematic Brilliance In ‘Shaolin’ Music Video

Seyi Vibez, Nigeria’s Afrobeats powerhouse and Vibez Inc. frontrunner, just dropped the video for Shaolin on February 26, 2025, and it’s nothing short of electrifying. Pulled from the third slot of the freshly released Children of Africa EP, this track gets a jaw-dropping visual treatment courtesy of TG Omori. The result? A gritty, soulful explosion that takes everything fans adore about Seyi and dials it up to eleven. Anyone catching this for the first time will see why he’s a name to watch.

The video kicks off with Seyi Vibez holding court like a streetwise king—or maybe a laid-back martial arts guru—flanked by a crew oozing loyalty and toughness. The story unfolds with a raw edge, blending Shaolin-inspired vibes (think slow-motion kicks and shadowy fighters) with the pulsing heartbeat of Lagos. That mix feels spot-on, mirroring Seyi’s climb from underground hustler to Afropop titan, and it hooks viewers right away.

Musically, Shaolin hits hard. Larrylanes lays down a beat that samples the 2007 Mo’ Hits gem Booty Call, giving it a fresh street-pop spin. Seyi’s voice easily dances between Yoruba and English, delivering lines about grit and glory that stick. The percussion thumps, the rhythm pulls, and the whole thing begs to be blasted loud—perfect for anyone who’s ever had to push through the grind.

Then there’s TG Omori, who turns the track into a visual storm. Dark tones and wild choreography set the stage, and the details leap out: bare-chested guys with white chalk smeared across their chests, rocking white-red glasses, channelling a zombie-thug swagger. A car dangles mid-air, held up by four models—pure madness. A knockout vixen steals a moment, her curves popping as she taps her ass right when Seyi belts “I love that booty”—cheeky and bold. Dancers spice it up even more, while Seyi floats overhead, suspended like he owns the scene. A cat slinks through, adding a creepy, thriller-horror twist. It’s chaotic, cinematic, and impossible to turn away from.

This drop feels massive for Seyi Vibez. As the first video tied to his new Vibez Inc. label, it screams next-level ambition. Children of Africa already proved he’s got depth, but Shaolin plants a flag—here’s an artist ready to lead. Social media’s buzzing with fans calling it a game-changer, and that energy’s hard to argue with. The vibe suggests 2025 could belong to him.

What stands out is how Shaolin blends fun with something deeper. The flash grabs attention, but it’s rooted in Seyi’s knack for turning hard-earned lessons into anthems that resonate. Since hitting YouTube today, it’s already lighting up the internet, hinting at big things ahead.

In an Afrobeats world packed with talent, Seyi Vibez keeps carving his path. Shaolin showcases him at his boldest—a sound and vision mix that feels fresh yet timeless. For longtime followers or total newbies, this is Seyi flexing his powers, proving he’s not just in the game but rewriting it. Buckle up, because this ride’s just getting started.

Why Are Many of Africa’s Smallest Countries Islands?

A pattern emerges when exploring the smallest countries in Africa: most are island nations. Seychelles, São Tomé and Príncipe, Mauritius, Comoros, and Cape Verde all lie off the mainland, shaped by their isolation and oceanic surroundings. This isn’t a coincidence—Africa’s continental landmass favors larger countries, while its islands naturally form smaller, self-contained states. These nations often rely on the sea for trade, fishing, and tourism, making their size an advantage.

What Makes These Small Countries Unique?

Africa’s smallest nations stand out for their diversity. Seychelles offers luxury, Rwanda showcases resilience, and Comoros blends aromas with adventure. Whether by land or population, their smallness amplifies their individuality, from volcanic wonders to cultural crossroads.

    Why Visit Africa’s Smallest Countries?

Africa’s smallest countries may lack the vastness of nations like Nigeria or Kenya, but they offer intimate experiences you won’t find elsewhere. From Seychelles’ luxury retreats to Comoros’ volcanic trails, these destinations cater to travellers seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural immersion. Their small size makes them manageable to explore, often in a single trip, without sacrificing depth or diversity.

    Conclusion

The 10 smallest African countries, whether measured by land mass or population, reveal a continent of contrasts. From Seychelles’ tiny 459 km² to Burundi’s dense millions, each nation brings something extraordinary to the table. Explore these hidden gems to uncover Africa’s lesser-known treasures. The investment firm recently snapped up one Bitcoin—clocking in at roughly 1.8 million rand ($98,200)—and isn’t stopping there. With eyes on a bigger prize, Altvest is now chasing regulatory green lights to raise $10 million through a share sale, all to beef up its Bitcoin stash.

Warren Wheatley, the firm’s CEO, isn’t mincing words about this bold pivot. “Bitcoin is our focus—no detours into altcoin territory,” he declared, channelling a laser-like dedication to the world’s top cryptocurrency. It’s a page straight out of the MicroStrategy playbook, the U.S. firm that turned heads in 2020 by piling into Bitcoin as its go-to reserve asset. For Altvest, the move is less about chasing crypto hype and more about locking in shareholder value, shielding against the South African rand’s wobbles, and tapping into a digital store of value that’s gone global.

South Africa’s crypto scene is heating up, and Altvest Capital isn’t jumping in blind. The country’s regulators are warming to the digital shift—back in March 2024, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority waved through 59 crypto outfits to operate legally. By October, over 31,000 merchants were cashing in on crypto payments via platforms like Luno, proof that Bitcoin and its ilk are weaving into the nation’s economic fabric. Altvest’s timing couldn’t be sharper, riding a wave of growing acceptance that’s turning heads from Cape Town to Nairobi.

This isn’t just a win for Altvest—it’s a neon sign for Africa’s corporate crowd. As the rand grapples with depreciation and economic uncertainty loom, Bitcoin’s allure as a hedge is tough to ignore. Wheatley’s crew isn’t gambling on a whim; they’re betting on a future where digital assets could redefine how firms across the continent stash their cash. Sure, crypto’s wild price swings keep sceptics on edge, but Altvest’s calculated plunge signals a broader trend: companies worldwide are eyeing Bitcoin as a legit piece of the financial puzzle.

What’s next? If Altvest Capital pulls off its $10 million raise, it could spark a domino effect. Picture this—other African firms, watching from the sidelines, might ditch the old-school Treasury handbook and dip their toes into the crypto pool. With regulators steadily carving out a clearer path, the continent’s financial innovators could find themselves at a tipping point. Altvest isn’t just holding Bitcoin; it’s holding a torch—one that might just light the way for a whole new era of asset management in Africa.

  • Ghanaian Startups Brace For Impact As AWS Slaps On A 21% Tax Hike

Ghanaian Startups Brace For Impact As AWS Slaps On A 21% Tax Hike

Ghanaian startups are staring down a steep cost increase as Amazon Web Services (AWS) prepares to slap a 21% tax on its cloud services starting March 1, 2025. The move, confirmed in a notice to customers, will hit businesses relying on the global tech giant for data storage and digital operations, driving up expenses in an already challenging economic climate. The tax includes a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) plus an extra 6% from levies like the National Health Insurance Levy, Ghana Education Trust Fund Levy, and COVID-19 Health Recovery Levy. For a startup scene that’s become a cornerstone of Ghana’s tech ambitions, this could mean slower growth and tougher competition against peers in less-taxed regions.

AWS framed the change as compliance with Ghana’s tax rules, urging customers to update their accounts with a Tax Registration Number for potential VAT deductions. But that’s cold comfort for founders grappling with a barrage of local taxes. Just two years ago, Ghana’s parliament rolled out new levies and bumped VAT from 12.5% to 15% to steady a wobbly economy. Now, with cloud services—a lifeline for digital innovation—getting pricier, some startups might turn to rival providers or even clunky on-premises setups, risking delays in product rollouts and market expansion.

Despite the gloom, Ghana’s public cloud market is still expected to rake in $306.10 million this year, a sign of its stubborn resilience. Hundreds of startups have leaned on affordable cloud access to fuel their rise, but this tax threatens to erode that edge. Chatter on X reflects the frustration—users warn of squeezed budgets and stalled digital progress. AWS, which started accepting Naira and other local currencies in 2023 to ease payment woes, now risks souring its goodwill in Ghana. As March looms, the tech community braces for a reckoning—one that could reshape its trajectory in unpredictable ways.

  • Kayla’s Kin Movie Review: Revenge Or Love?

Kayla’s Kin Movie Review: Revenge Or Love?

Kayla’s Kin is a story that follows Kayla, a woman whose painful experiences have led her to distrust men. However, fate brings her into the life of a man who may be her own kin, unexpectedly linking her to the very past that has defined her future. Written by Sandra Ogbodi, who also stars in the film, Kayla’s Kin is directed by Austin Nwaolie.

    Plot

Kayla is a successful furniture mogul whose childhood trauma has left her deeply distrustful of men. Determined to remain single, she has turned down every suitor despite her mother’s constant pressure to settle down before she turns 30. Kayla’s strong-willed nature keeps her focused on her business, but fate has other plans.

Meanwhile, Andre returns to Nigeria after years abroad, intent on learning the ropes of his father’s business. Though his father, Chief, persistently hints at his desire for grandchildren, Andre remains focused on his career. However, his father’s empire holds dark secrets that extend beyond the surface of wealth and power.

One evening, while dining with his father, Andre crosses paths with Kayla and her friend. Unbeknownst to her, this was not their first encounter as Andre had seen her before and felt an inexplicable pull toward her. Summoning the courage to approach her, he is instantly shut down. But instead of being deterred, Andre becomes even more intrigued and determined to see her again. He later visits her at work and convinces her to go on a date.

As their connection deepens, Kayla’s mother becomes unsettled upon hearing Andre’s surname, linking it to a dark past. When she mentions this to Andre, he shocks her with a revelation that Chief is not his biological father but the man who raised him.

The story takes a gripping turn when Kayla and Andre visit Chief’s estate for a weekend getaway. Suspicious of Chief’s true nature, Kayla secretly searches his study, only to uncover a shocking truth, Chief is her long-lost father. Driven by the need for answers, she hires a private investigator to track his movements.

What they uncover is beyond comprehension. Chief is not just a businessman; he is at the center of a gruesome human and organ trafficking operation. His hideout reveals chilling evidence—captured victims and mutilated bodies. As Kayla attempts to gather proof, she finds herself face-to-face with Chief, leading to a tense and dangerous confrontation.

Would Kayla and Andre escape unscathed? Will justice be served?

    Cast

Sandra Agbodi takes on the role of Kayla, and despite not being a familiar face on screen, her performance is surprisingly compelling. While some might mistake her acting for being underwhelming, it is, in fact, a raw and realistic portrayal. She masterfully transitions between a hardened businesswoman, a vulnerable lover, and a daughter caught in a web of family secrets. Her ability to navigate these layers makes for an intriguing watch.

Andre, played by Tope Tedela, delivers a solid performance, grounding the film with his charisma and composure. He complements Kayla’s character, balancing out any emotional gaps in her portrayal. However, the on-screen chemistry between the two leads falls flat. Whether this is a deliberate choice to reflect Kayla’s emotional walls or a case of weak chemistry remains debatable.

The film also features seasoned actors like Tina Mba, Ekpeyoung Bassey-Iyang, and Yetunde Adeniji, whose performances add depth to the overall storytelling.

    Language

Kayla’s Kin was performed in English.

    Summary

Kayla’s Kin had the potential for a gripping storyline, but a rushed ending and subpar production quality diminished its impact. While the actors delivered decent performances and the plot itself was engaging, the film faltered in its climax, failing to build the suspense necessary for a thrilling conclusion.

READ MORE: The Trade Movie Review: Reliving Evans The Kidnap Kigpin’s Life

One of the film’s highlights was the location chosen for Kayla’s furniture business, which was visually impressive and added authenticity to her character’s success. However, the same attention to detail was sorely lacking in critical moments. The props used in the organ harvesting scenes, for instance, were laughably unrealistic, significantly weakening the tension and believability of the plot’s darker elements.

Ultimately, while Kayla’s Kin had a solid foundation, its weak execution, particularly in the final act, left much to be desired. With better pacing and improved production quality, it could have been a far more impactful thriller.

  • Ada Omo Daddy Movie Review: A Tale Of Secrets, Betrayal And Redemption

Ada Omo Daddy Movie Review: A Tale Of Secrets, Betrayal And Redemption

Nollywood continues to deliver compelling stories, and Ada Omo Daddy is no exception. Produced by Mercy Aigbe in 2023 and now streaming on Netflix, the film unravels a tale of a young woman who stumbles upon a shocking truth—her paternity has been a lie, and the real Omo Daddy is actually Ada by birth. With a stellar cast, lavish settings, and a blend of drama and suspense, Ada Omo Daddy offers a storyline that keeps viewers engaged.

    Plot

It all started with what looked like a gang fight—chaos, shouting, a mother desperately running from the scene until a gunshot rang out, cutting through the night.

Fast forward, and the world couldn’t seem more different. Pero Balogun, the first daughter of the influential Banks family, had just been named Managing Director of the Logun Group, a position once held by her father. Pero, fondly called Omo Daddy—Daddy’s Girl—had never known a life where she didn’t get exactly what she wanted. And that day was no different. She strolled, unaware, toward a surprise engagement as Victor, the man she loved, got down on one knee to propose. Life was perfect. Or so she thought.

Then came the call.  Pero’s mother, Ireti, answered it, her face draining of color. On the other end was Ifeanyi. His voice alone was enough to send her into a fit of rage, threatening and cursing him. But Ifeanyi was relentless. Moments later, Pero’s phone rang and Ifeanyi introduced himself as her father and Ada was her real name. She dismissed him outright thinking he was a fraudster. Still, something about the call gnawed at her. When she confronted her mother and aunt, they denied knowing him and also asserted that he was a fraudster.  Soon after, Ireti and her sister, Motun, stormed Ifeanyi’s house, demanding he stay out of Pero’s life. Ifeanyi, however, was done being ignored. He wanted his daughter back, no matter what it took. And he had proof.

But the truth doesn’t stay buried forever. That same evening, a package arrived at Pero’s doorstep. Inside were photographs—her as a baby, cradled in Ifeanyi’s arms, her mother right beside them. The second she confronted Ireti again, the truth unraveled. Ifeanyi was indeed her father. He and Ireti met during their Youth Service and fell in love. However, when Ireti became pregnant, she pressured him into marriage. Despite this, Ifeanyi’s promiscuous lifestyle persisted, ultimately leading to the collapse of their marriage.

Pero reeled from the revelation. Mr. Banks, the man she had always called Dad, had known all along. The weight of the lie was suffocating, but curiosity won over anger. She reached out to Ifeanyi, and one meeting became another.

As her wedding day approached, Ifeanyi insisted on being a part of it. He wanted his family represented, and Pero, torn between the past and the present, didn’t stop him. But secrets have a way of exploding.  Ireti soon discovered that Pero had been secretly visiting Ifeanyi, and the confrontation was inevitable. Mother and daughter clashed in a heated argument that ended with Pero storming out of the house and unreachable.

Now, standing at the crossroads of her life, Pero had to make an impossible decision—who was truly her family, and which past would define her future.

    Cast

Ada Omo Daddy boasts a stellar cast, including Sola Sobowale, Omowunmi Dada, Dele Odule, Mercy Aigbe, Tayo Faniran, Charles Okafor, Carol King, Chinwetalu Agu, Phyna and many others. Each actor delivers commendable performances, breathing life into their characters. While some roles, such as Pero’s in-laws, felt unnecessary to the central plot, their inclusion maintained consistency. Chinwetalu Agu’s presence, known for his iconic mystical roles, had audiences anticipating something more intense, but his character’s schemes never escalated beyond “Plans A-Z”. Nevertheless, it was commendable how she incorporated veteran actors who are rarely seen on screen Overall, the cast was perfectly suited for the movie’s plot.

    Language

The movie was performed in English, Yoruba and Igbo.

    Summary

Ada Omo Daddy was an engaging watch, thanks to its strong cast, consistent storyline, and visually appealing settings and costumes. However, the sound production was lacking, as the background music often overpowered the actors’ voices. The wedding reception scene felt unnecessary, seemingly included more for publicity than for narrative depth. Overall, while the movie was enjoyable, its plot was fairly predictable—one we’ve seen many times before, only this time set against a backdrop of luxury.

  • Nigeria To Tax Cryptocurrency Transactions Amid Revenue Push

Nigeria To Tax Cryptocurrency Transactions Amid Revenue Push

Nigeria is set to introduce taxes on cryptocurrency transactions as part of a broader strategy to increase government revenue, according to the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). A bill outlining the taxation framework is currently under review and is expected to pass within the first quarter of the year, Bloomberg reports.

The SEC aims to integrate eligible crypto transactions on regulated exchanges into the formal tax system, citing the potential for “substantial” revenue generation, though exact figures were not disclosed. This move aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s fiscal reforms, which focus on reducing Nigeria’s budget deficit and stabilizing the country’s economy.

Nigeria has emerged as one of Africa’s largest cryptocurrency markets, fueled by high inflation and a depreciating naira. Many Nigerians have turned to digital assets as a hedge against economic instability. However, this surge in crypto adoption has also drawn increased regulatory scrutiny.

In addition to taxation, the SEC plans to issue more licenses for centralized crypto exchanges, arguing that they provide better monitoring and investor protection compared to decentralized alternatives. Regulators anticipate that centralized platforms will gain traction among Nigerian investors seeking security and compliance assurances.

The announcement follows recent developments in Nigeria’s cryptocurrency landscape, including the release of a detained Binance executive and criticism from U.S. lawmakers over the government’s handling of the crypto sector. These events signal growing international attention on Nigeria’s approach to digital asset regulation.

With a proposed 2025 budget of 54.99 trillion naira ($36.4 billion), the Nigerian government sees crypto taxation as a viable revenue source. As policymakers move forward with formalizing this framework, the impact on Nigeria’s crypto ecosystem remains to be seen.

  • Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo Becomes The First Person To Run A Half Marathon Below 57 Minutes

Uganda’s Jacob Kiplimo Becomes The First Person To Run A Half Marathon Below 57 Minutes

Ugandan long-distance sensation Jacob Kiplimo made history on Sunday (February 16, 2025) at the eDreams Mitja Marató Barcelona by Brooks, becoming the first person to run a half marathon in under 57 minutes. The 24-year-old shattered the previous world record by 48 seconds, clocking a stunning 56:42 at the World Athletics Gold Label event.

Kiplimo’s performance erased the previous world record of 57:30, set by Ethiopia’s Yomif Kejelcha, marking the largest single improvement in the history of the men’s half marathon record. The race unfolded under perfect conditions, with temperatures at 13°C and no wind, setting the stage for a historic achievement.

Kiplimo’s dominance was evident from the early stages. Kenyan pacemaker Edwin Kimosong initially set a 2:45/km pace, but Kiplimo quickly took control just eight minutes into the race, picking up the tempo in pursuit of a world record. At the 5km mark, he clocked 13:34, already inside world record pace. His 10km split of 26:46 put him well ahead of the record trajectory, and by 15km, he set a world best of 40:07, further solidifying his incredible form.

With every passing kilometre, Kiplimo continued to push the limits, covering the second half of the race at an astonishing pace. His 20km split of 53:42 confirmed the inevitable, and he crossed the finish line in 56:42, obliterating the previous mark. Behind him, Geoffrey Kamworor of Kenya finished second in 58:44, while Samwel Mailu took third in 59:40.

“It has been the perfect race,” said Kiplimo. “Ideal temperature, no wind at all, fantastic circuit – everything went better than expected. The pacemaker set the agreed 2:45 pace, but I found myself full of energy and decided to inject a brisker rhythm from the third kilometer. I never imagined I would break the 57-minute barrier; that’s astonishing.”

Kiplimo, a two-time world cross-country champion, also confirmed that he will now focus on his marathon debut at the London Marathon on April 27.

In the women’s race, Kenya’s former world record-holder Joyciline Jepkosgei delivered a dominant performance, winning in a lifetime best of 1:04:13. The 31-year-old defended her title in style, setting a course record and moving to seventh on the all-time list.

Jepkosgei pulled away from the competition early, reaching 5km in 15:25 before hitting the 10km mark in 30:08, already 37 seconds ahead of her nearest rival, Gladys Chepkurui. By the 15km point, her lead had extended to over a minute, and she powered home unchallenged to secure back-to-back victories in Barcelona.

“It’s my third year in a row competing here in Barcelona,” Jepkosgei said. “I managed a runner-up place and two wins, so I’m more than satisfied. In addition, I have bettered my PB, which was not easy, so I can’t ask for more. I hope to return next year. I’m also impressed by Kiplimo’s great achievement.”

  • Nigerian Banking Stocks Surge 12.24% Amid Capital Raises And Investor Optimism

Nigerian Banking Stocks Surge 12.24% Amid Capital Raises And Investor Optimism

Nigerian banking stocks have experienced a significant surge, climbing 12.24% since January 7, as major lenders raised over ₦1 trillion ($662 million) from the stock market to meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new capital requirements. The NGX Banking Index, which tracks banking stocks, closed higher on February 14, reflecting renewed investor confidence in the sector.

Leading the rally, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) saw its share price rise by 12.90% to close at ₦63.45, while Zenith Bank shares climbed 4.03% to ₦51.60 following the announcement of its capital raise. The trend highlights increased investor interest in Nigerian banks as they bolster their capital positions.

In March 2024, the CBN significantly increased the minimum capital threshold for banks, prompting a rush to raise fresh capital. The new requirements exclude retained earnings from qualifying capital, accelerating capital raises ahead of the 2026 compliance deadline.

GTCO raised ₦209 billion in the first phase of its recapitalization plan, while Zenith Bank secured ₦350.4 billion through a rights issue and public offer. These two institutions alone have raised over ₦559.4 billion, contributing to the broader banking sector’s capital raise exceeding ₦1 trillion.

The stock market’s response suggests optimism about the banking sector’s profitability and stability. According to Azeez Lawal, managing director of TrustBanc Asset Management Limited, the stability in banking stocks will persist, but further growth may depend on audited financial statements and dividend announcements.

The surge in banking stocks coincides with broader economic shifts, including increased foreign investment inflows into Nigeria. Despite global market volatility, investor sentiment has improved due to Nigeria’s recent currency reforms and stabilization measures.

Bloomberg reports that Nigeria’s sovereign risk spread has fallen to its lowest level since January 2020, reversing the premium accumulated during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. This suggests renewed confidence in the country’s financial system.

However, analysts caution that sustaining the rally will depend on macroeconomic stability and regulatory clarity. January often sees increased stock market activity, meaning the recent growth may not entirely reflect long-term market fundamentals.

With Nigerian banks securing fresh capital and positioning for expansion, all eyes will be on their upcoming financial statements and dividend payouts to determine the next phase of market movement.

  • Ranking Every Davido Album From Worst To Best

Ranking Every Davido Album From Worst To Best

It feels like just yesterday when a teenage Davido burst onto our screens with Back When, marking the beginning of a legendary career. Over the years, he has released some of the most iconic Davido albums, shaping the Afrobeats genre.

The 001 of Afrobeats has cemented himself as one of the industry’s most consistent hitmakers, delivering banger after banger with reckless abandon. Yet, the veteran shows no signs of slowing down—his fifth studio album, 5ive, is set for release on March 14, 2025.

As we anticipate 5ive, we take a dive into his discography, ranking Davido albums from worst to best. From Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis to Timeless, we revisit the music that secured his place in the Hall of Fame of Nigerian music.

    5. A Better Time (2020)

Worst Despite spurning smash hits like FEM, The Best, and Jowo, Davido’s third album, A Better Time, felt more like a compilation of potential hits than a cohesive body of work. In a year when his eternal rivals, Burna Boy and Wizkid, delivered groundbreaking albums with Twice as Tall and Made in Lagos, Davido failed to rise to the occasion. The album lacked a central theme as Davido relied on a hit-first approach that resulted in a 17-track album that delivered only a handful of satisfying records completely eclipsed by a majority of forgettable songs. The international features—Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, and Nas—felt like forced additions aimed at commercial success rather than seamless collaborations. No song encapsulates how terrible this album is more than Birthday Cake with Nas, a horrible record that fell flat despite the legendary rapper’s presence. Overall, A Better Time lacked quality, failed to leave a lasting impact, and was quickly forgotten. Good riddance.

    4. Son of Mercy (2016) [EP]

In 2016, the Afrobeats to the World movement was in its infancy and Davido was one of the genre’s biggest names. With growing international demand and a lucrative recording contract with Sony Music in place, he released Son of Mercy, his major-label debut. In an attempt to appeal to an international audience still unfamiliar with the Nigerian Pop sound, Davido adopted a Western R&B/Pop sound which was a clear departure from his signature Afrobeats style. While songs like Gbagbe Oshi and Coolest Kid in Africa had their moments, the project ultimately lacked the X-factor needed to truly connect. Unfortunately, Son of Mercy failed to resonate with both his core fan base and the international audience he tried to impress, leaving the EP feeling inconsequential and—in Davido’s own words—sounding like shit.

    3. Omo Baba Olowo – The Genesis(2012)

Davido’s career is synonymous with hit songs and his debut album delivered a number of them. Records like Dami Duro, Ekuro, All of You, and Overseas laid the foundation for his incredible career and still continue to thrill longtime fans and new audiences to this day. The album showcases the relentless energy of a teenage but highly ambitious Davido who basks in the glory of newfound fame and fortune, resulting in a celebratory debut. While Omo Baba Olowo had its flaws—its songwriting left much to be desired and his vocals needed training—the album has aged well and remains both relevant and enjoyable. A testament to Davido’s undeniable ability to craft music that stands the test of time.

    2. Timeless (2023)

After what seemed like a long hiatus following the unfortunate passing of his son, Davido made a strong comeback with Timeless, showing growth and maturity as he refined the flaws of his previous albums to deliver his most polished and seamless body of work yet. Songs like Unavailable, Kante, No Competition, and Feel became instant fan favourites while records like Na Money, Godfather, and LCND have all aged like fine wine. The album sells well two years after its release, solidifying its place as Davido’s most defining work.

    1. A Good Time (2019)

A Good Time is easily Davido’s most complete and impressive album. As the name implies, Davido delivered on his promise of A Good Time while providing a vivid image of his journey to becoming one of Africa’s biggest pop stars. With songs like Blow My Mind, Risky, Sweet in the Middle, Disturbance, Big Picture, and D&G, the album delivered multiple hits while still feeling well-curated. A Good Time is the offering of an artist who has consistently fine-tuned his craft and removed the rough edges that once held his music back. The result is a fully clear vision for the future of his artistry, buoyant and undeniably infectious. A Good Time stands as one of Afrobeats’ finest albums and is a testament to Davido’s unwavering resolve to continue evolving. It is without doubt the best Davido album of all time.

Warner Music Group Finalizes Full Acquisition Of Africori

Warner Music Group (WMG) has officially completed its acquisition of Africori, a leading African digital music distribution, rights management, and label services company. This move follows Warner’s majority stake purchase in the company in 2022.

Africori will continue to operate as a standalone entity, with CEO Yoel Kenan remaining in his role and reporting to Temi Adeniji, managing director of Warner Music Africa. The company currently represents over 7,000 artists, including notable names such as Kelvin Momo, Master KG, Nkosazana Daughter, Oscar Mbo, and TitoM and Yuppe.

Kenan expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We’ve had an incredibly successful few years partnering with Temi Adeniji and Warner Music. From the beginning of the venture, our shared vision of connecting African music with fans from across the world was evident. She highlighted the synergy between the two companies, emphasizing how Warner’s investment has fueled growth for African artists. “We’ve upstreamed Africori artists and plugged them into our global network, delivering international remixes and trend-driven cross-collaborations that have helped elevate their careers,” she said.

Warner Music’s full acquisition of Africori reinforces its commitment to expanding its footprint in Africa, a market that continues to gain global recognition for its rich musical talent and cultural influence.

  • Meta To Lay Off About 100 Employees In Africa As Part Of 3,000 Global Cuts

Meta To Lay Off About 100 Employees In Africa As Part Of 3,000 Global Cuts

Meta is set to lay off 3,000 employees across Africa, Europe, and Asia, starting today, Monday, February 10, 2024. The company has confirmed it will begin notifying affected staff, with notices rolling out from 5 a.m. local time in many countries. While employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will remain unaffected due to strict local labor laws, workers in other parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa could face uncertainty over the coming days, with the layoffs expected to extend through February 18.

The latest round of cuts comes as part of Meta’s ongoing effort to streamline its workforce, with the company specifically targeting its “lowest performers.” According to an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People, referred to these reductions as “performance terminations,” signalling a shift from the broad, sweeping layoffs that defined earlier rounds. This time, Meta is avoiding major office closures or public announcements in an effort to downplay the impact.

Though Meta is letting go of a significant number of employees, it is simultaneously ramping up hiring in key areas, especially machine learning engineers and other essential engineering roles. Peng Fan, VP of Engineering for Monetization, sent out a separate memo urging staff to expedite hiring between February 11 and March 13, making it clear that AI-focused roles will be a top priority moving forward.

In Africa, Meta’s downsizing has been particularly noticeable in Nigeria. Last June, the company quietly reduced its office space in Lagos after laying off at least 35 employees, including its entire Nigerian engineering team. While the company initially described this as part of a routine real estate review, it now seems more like a strategic retrenchment from local operations. Though it’s still unclear how many Nigerians will be impacted by this latest round of layoffs, the trend suggests that the region is once again facing significant job cuts.

Meta’s focus on AI as its main growth driver for 2025 highlights the company’s pivot toward more automated, data-driven operations. As layoffs and hiring efforts collide, the shifting landscape at Meta continues to raise questions about the future of its workforce, particularly in regions like Africa, where the company’s presence is shrinking.

For many employees, especially those in Africa, the uncertainty surrounding these layoffs underscores a larger, ongoing trend of contraction that could signal a long-term reduction in Meta’s commitment to the region. The coming weeks may provide more clarity on how deeply the cuts will affect operations in Africa, as well as the future of Meta’s local workforce.

  • Qing Madi – I Am The Blueprint Album Review: Decent Debut

Qing Madi – I Am The Blueprint Album Review: Decent Debut

When Qing Madi burst into the scene with See Finish, it was clear that the teenager was destined for incredible things. Her self-titled debut EP was a brilliant showcase of her vocal range and songwriting ability. The EP seemed tailored to a niche teenage audience as Madi spoke to the sensibilities of her generation, whether she was discussing her ambitions or romance.

A little over a year since her debut EP, Qing Madi has cemented her place as one of Africa’s finest young talents, and even the sky doesn’t seem to be the limit for her. Her debut album, I Am The Blueprint, reflects her confidence, self-assurance and youthful audacity as she refuses to be defined by others, asserting her identity and artistic vision with the belief that she is creating a template and setting a standard for her generation to follow.

She documents her lofty dreams on the opener Bucket List, an introspective yet ambitious anthem that reflects her dreams, determination, and belief in her destiny. The song blends self-affirmation with a deep desire for success, as she acknowledges the long journey ahead while remaining confident in her potential. Her bucket list is full of dreams—winning a Grammy, building an empire, and buying her mother a mansion. The song relates her desire to make a lasting impact.

While her confidence is sky-high, Madi still contends with internal battles as she reveals on Pressure. These internal battles could arise from doubts, pressure, past mistakes, and the weight of personal struggles. While she acknowledges her struggles, she seems pretty unconcerned as she relies on God for hope and redemption, putting trust in God and letting go of battles that are beyond her control.

While Qing Madi has said in multiple interviews that she has yet to have a romantic experience, romance makes for a significant chunk of this album. She lets her imagination run wild as she explores romance and its complexities on the album.

The Prestige-produced Ali Bomaye is a soulful song that expresses deep gratitude and love for a significant other. The song captures the essence of finding solace in love amidst life’s chaos. Its infectious rhythm makes for a satisfying listen, but the writing on the hook is lazy.

While it’s clear Qing Madi wants to create accessible and resonant hooks on this album to appeal to a broader audience, her talent suggests she’s capable of crafting far more compelling hooks than this.

On the bouncy Afropop Akanchawa laced with infectious strings, the singer expresses a willingness to give everything for the person who has captured her heart. She is so drawn to them that she is willing to set aside her ego, indicating a deep emotional connection.

She repeats similar sentiments in the passionate and playful Goosebumps, where she expresses deep attraction and admiration for her love interest. Qing Madi delivers a vibrant and rhythmic record that reflects the excitement of being infatuated with someone as she sings, “I get a lot of goosebumps when I’m with you”.

Qing Madi balances the vibrant and exciting aspects of romance with a candid portrayal of its darker, more troubled dimensions. Favorite Psycho is a deeply compelling and moving R&B number where she passionately sings about a complicated situation where deep emotions are intertwined with heartbreak and loyalty. It’s a heartfelt portrayal of someone caught in the emotional chaos of a difficult relationship as well as a cautionary tale about the dangers of blind loyalty and the need for people to place more value on themselves. It’s the best song on the album.

It’s a Game is a close second on the list of best songs on this album. Madi talks about being manipulated in a relationship, which eventually leads to questions being asked about the true intentions of her love interest. Qing Madi’s delivery conveys the pain of betrayal as Wademix crafts a minimalistic yet atmospheric beat driven by chilling chords and mild kicks. Garden is a soft and deeply intimate record aided by its melodic delivery and heartfelt lyrics. Garden in this context represents a safe space where love can flourish, free from doubts and fear. A minute with me in the garden / So, won’t you gimme just a one chance, chargie she sings.

READ MORE: Qing Madi: The Afrobeats Woman King

While the album is really good, its Achilles heel is its heavy reliance on a narrow range of sounds and production, which results in a lack of sonic depth. Many songs on the album have the same tempo, energy and mood.

The album follows a predictable structure with no twists to keep listeners engaged. This is where a handful of features would have been necessary to deliver the variety the album sorely needed.

When an album maintains the same sound and tempo, it can create a sense of monotony, which can make potentially great songs sound intolerable. Records like Gimme Your Love, One Day, Right Here and Feeling Alright, which may have been enjoyable songs in a different context, make for a tedious listen due to the similarities they share with most of the other songs on the album.

Despite these flaws, Qing Madi can hold her head high and be proud of herself. Debut albums are by far the hardest to pull off, especially when you’ve enjoyed success like she has in the last year. Overall, it is a satisfactory debut offering from a teenager who is still finding herself. This writer is excited for her.
