Crypto Market Slips As Trading Volume Drops To $61.3 Billion

The cryptocurrency market has seen a downturn in the last 24 hours, with trading volume falling by 2.83% to $61.3 billion. Bitcoin (BTC) remained volatile, fluctuating between $96,051.56 and $97,672.65, while Ethereum (ETH) dropped 1.40% to $2,660.60. The overall market capitalisation also declined by 1.32% to $3.19 trillion.

Bitcoin has been trading within a tight range, losing 1.32% since yesterday. Despite this short-term pressure, institutional interest continues to grow, with Japanese investment firm Metaplanet announcing plans to expand its Bitcoin holdings from 1,762 BTC to a target of 10,000 BTC by the end of 2025.

Ethereum followed Bitcoin’s lead, falling 1.40%, while XRP recorded a sharper decline of 3.55%. Solana took the biggest hit among major cryptocurrencies, plunging 6.18% to test a critical support level at $181.

Meme coins were not spared in the downturn. Dogecoin (DOGE) slipped nearly 2% to trade at $0.26, while Shiba Inu (SHIB) dropped over 1% to $0.00001592. TRUMP coin fell 3% to $18.36. Meanwhile, a few altcoins bucked the trend, with Sonic (S) gaining 4% to hit $0.544, PancakeSwap (CAKE) rising 3% to $2.74, and The Graph (GRT) climbing 3% to $0.1417.

Among the hardest-hit tokens, Jupiter (JUP) suffered a 10% loss, dropping to $0.8438, while Litecoin (LTC) and Raydium (RAY) also struggled, with LTC falling 8% to $124.52 and RAY declining 7% to $4.91.

Adding to market developments, crypto exchange FTX is set to begin repaying creditors with claims under $50,000 starting February 18. The payments, facilitated by BitGo and Kraken, are expected to restore some investor confidence.

In contrast to the broader market slump, the Grok token saw an 82% surge following Elon Musk’s confirmation of the Grok 3 AI launch. Traders rushed to capitalize on the hype, pushing the token’s market cap to approximately $33.51 million. At last check, Grok was trading at around $0.0053, despite having no official ties to Musk’s AI venture, xAI.

With Grok 3 set to debut on Monday at 8:00 PM Pacific Time, speculation remains high. However, questions persist about the sustainability of the token’s rally, given its lack of fundamental backing.

  • Nigerian Banking Stocks Surge 12.24% Amid Capital Raises And Investor Optimism

Nigerian Banking Stocks Surge 12.24% Amid Capital Raises And Investor Optimism

Nigerian banking stocks have experienced a significant surge, climbing 12.24% since January 7, as major lenders raised over ₦1 trillion ($662 million) from the stock market to meet the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) new capital requirements. The NGX Banking Index, which tracks banking stocks, closed higher on February 14, reflecting renewed investor confidence in the sector.

Leading the rally, Guaranty Trust Holding Company (GTCO) saw its share price rise by 12.90% to close at ₦63.45, while Zenith Bank shares climbed 4.03% to ₦51.60 following the announcement of its capital raise. The trend highlights increased investor interest in Nigerian banks as they bolster their capital positions.

In March 2024, the CBN significantly increased the minimum capital threshold for banks, prompting a rush to raise fresh capital. The new requirements exclude retained earnings from qualifying capital, accelerating capital raises ahead of the 2026 compliance deadline.

GTCO raised ₦209 billion in the first phase of its recapitalization plan, while Zenith Bank secured ₦350.4 billion through a rights issue and public offer. These two institutions alone have raised over ₦559.4 billion, contributing to the broader banking sector’s capital raise exceeding ₦1 trillion.

The stock market’s response suggests optimism about the banking sector’s profitability and stability. According to Azeez Lawal, managing director of TrustBanc Asset Management Limited, the stability in banking stocks will persist, but further growth may depend on audited financial statements and dividend announcements.

The surge in banking stocks coincides with broader economic shifts, including increased foreign investment inflows into Nigeria. Despite global market volatility, investor sentiment has improved due to Nigeria’s recent currency reforms and stabilization measures.

Bloomberg reports that Nigeria’s sovereign risk spread has fallen to its lowest level since January 2020, reversing the premium accumulated during the economic downturn caused by the pandemic. This suggests renewed confidence in the country’s financial system.

However, analysts caution that sustaining the rally will depend on macroeconomic stability and regulatory clarity. January often sees increased stock market activity, meaning the recent growth may not entirely reflect long-term market fundamentals.

With Nigerian banks securing fresh capital and positioning for expansion, all eyes will be on their upcoming financial statements and dividend payouts to determine the next phase of market movement.

Smart Strategies to Improve Your Baba Ijebu Success

While lottery games are based on chance, these strategies can help you play more intelligently:

    1. Study Past Results

How it helps: Identify frequently drawn numbers (hot numbers) and rarely drawn numbers (cold numbers)

    How to do it:

    • Visit https://babaijebu.ng/past-results
    • Review the last 30-90 days of draws for your favorite game
    • Note which numbers appear most often
    • Consider mixing hot numbers with your personal picks

Example: If numbers 7, 23, and 45 have appeared frequently in Club Master over the past month, consider including them in your selection.

    2. Play Multiple Combinations

How it helps: Increases your coverage and chances of matching winning numbers

    How to do it:

    • Instead of playing one 5-number combination, play 3-5 different combinations
    • Spread your stake across different number sets
    • Mix different betting types (Direct, Perm, NAP)

Budget tip: If you normally stake ₦500 on one ticket, consider playing 5 tickets at ₦100 each with different numbers.

    3. Balance Your Number Selection

How it helps: Avoids predictable patterns that many players use

    How to do it:

    • Mix high and low numbers (e.g., don’t play all numbers under 20)
    • Combine odd and even numbers (e.g., 3 odd + 2 even)
    • Avoid sequences (e.g., don’t play 1-2-3-4-5)
    • Spread across ranges (pick from different decades: 1-10, 11-20, etc.)

    Example of balanced selection: 7, 18, 34, 51, 72 (mixed odd/even, spread across range)

Example of poor selection: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 (all even, all low, predictable pattern)

    4. Join a Lottery Syndicate

How it helps: Pool resources with other players to buy more tickets

    How to do it:

    • Form a group with friends, family, or coworkers
    • Contribute equally to a shared ticket fund

    Frequently Asked Questions

How often are Baba Ijebu results for today updated?

Baba Ijebu draws happen multiple times daily: 6 draws Monday through Saturday and 4 draws on Sunday. Results are typically published on the official website, mobile app, and social media within 5-10 minutes after each draw closes. Check immediately after your game’s scheduled draw time (e.g., MSP at 7:50 PM) for the fastest access to winning numbers.

Can I see yesterday’s Baba Ijebu results?

Yes, you can easily view yesterday’s results and previous draws. Visit https://babaijebu.ng and click on “Past Results” or “Result History.” You can filter by game type (Club Master, VAG, National, etc.) and select any previous date. The mobile app also has a results archive. Past results are typically available for 90 days.

Is the *755# USSD code free to use?

Dialing *755# is free of charge on all Nigerian networks (MTN, Glo, Airtel, 9Mobile). However, your mobile network provider may charge standard SMS rates when you receive the results text message. The fee is typically ₦4-₦10 per SMS depending on your carrier. This makes *755# ideal for quick result checks anywhere in Nigeria without internet access.

What’s the biggest Baba Ijebu prize ever won?

The largest recorded Baba Ijebu jackpot win is ₦28 million Naira. This life-changing prize was won by a lucky player who matched all 5 numbers in exact order on a Direct bet. While jackpots of this size are rare, Baba Ijebu pays out millions in smaller prizes daily across its 41 weekly games. Your next ticket could be the one that breaks the record!

Where can I find Baba Ijebu result for today evening on Facebook?

Follow the official Baba Ijebu Facebook page @BabaIjebuOfficial for evening draw results. Premier Lotto posts results within 10-15 minutes after each evening draw (typically 7:50 PM, 8:50 PM, and 10:50 PM draws depending on the day). Turn on post notifications to get instant alerts. Be cautious of unofficial pages or groups—always verify results against the official Baba Ijebu website for accuracy.

Baba Ijebu result for today prediction – does it work?

While many websites and individuals offer “Baba Ijebu predictions” or “sure numbers,” it’s important to understand that all lottery draws are random and unpredictable. No one can accurately predict winning numbers consistently. Predictions are typically based on past draw analysis, hot/cold numbers, or personal intuition—none of which guarantee wins. The best strategy is to play responsibly within your budget, use balanced number selection, and remember that lottery is entertainment, not a reliable income source.

What are all the lotto results available today in Nigeria?

Beyond Baba Ijebu/Premier Lotto, other Nigerian lottery results available today include:

    • Golden Chance Lotto (KEY, VOGUE, National, Green Lotto)
    • Ghana Lotto (Monday Special, Midweek, Lucky Tuesday)
    • Western Lotto (Various daily draws)
    • Bingo (Daily draws)
    • Set Lotto (National results)

For the most popular and reliable platform, Baba Ijebu remains Nigeria’s #1 choice with the most daily draws and widest accessibility.

Are there reliable Baba Ijebu predictions for today?

While many sources claim to offer “today’s sure numbers” or “100% predictions,” remember that lottery draws are completely random. No legitimate system can predict random number generators. However, you can use statistical analysis of past results to make informed choices:

    • Identify frequently drawn numbers (hot numbers)
    • Notice rarely drawn numbers (cold numbers)
    • Analyze number distribution patterns
    • Balance odd/even and high/low numbers

These strategies don’t predict results but help you make smarter number selections. Always play responsibly and never rely on paid “prediction services” promising guaranteed wins.

  • Umjolo: There Is No Cure Movie Review – Battle For Love And Identity

Umjolo: There Is No Cure Movie Review – Battle For Love And Identity

Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the highly anticipated fourth instalment of the Umjolo series arrives on Netflix. This latest chapter, Umjolo: There is no cure delves deeper into the life of Nana, a character briefly introduced in Umjolo: My Beginning! My End!. A reserved and introspective writer, Nana’s world turns unexpectedly when she crosses paths with the confident and charismatic Thoko Duma. What begins as a professional endeavour—a biography—quickly evolves into a complex and emotionally charged journey of self-discovery, love, and buried secrets.

    Plot

Thoko Duma has always been a winner, an overachiever, a powerhouse, and the reigning Miss South Africa—until she wasn’t. After a controversial second-place finish at Miss Universe, Thoko’s refusal to accept defeat spirals into a scandalous interview, costing her the coveted crown back home. But Thoko is not one to stay down for long. If she can’t wear a crown, she’ll cement her legacy another way through a tell-all biography. And who better to write it than the elusive Nana Ndlovu?

Nana, a talented yet introverted writer, has dodged her mother’s matchmaking efforts for years. But her biggest struggle isn’t romance—it’s her own identity. Anxious and uncertain, she skips out on a scheduled book signing, only to have fate intervene in the unlikeliest of places—a bathroom. That’s where she first crosses paths with Thoko Duma.

Thoko, always ten steps ahead, handpicks Nana to immortalize her story. With some coaxing from her best friend Zweli, Nana agrees but under strict conditions, including a rock-solid NDA. Yet, when their first official meeting arrives, Nana fumbles, too afraid to admit she’s actually the celebrated Liana Ndlovu. Instead, she pretends to be her own assistant. The lie sets off a chain reaction, leading to an unlikely friendship, countless late-night writing sessions, and feelings neither of them expected.

At a high-profile party, a tipsy Nana lets slip the truth—she has feelings for Thoko. Just as things heat up, a curveball is thrown: Chef Sindi, a rising culinary star, declares her and Thoko an official couple. Thoko, caught between damage control and personal feelings, plays along for the sake of sponsorships and luxury vacations. Meanwhile, Nana, devastated, withdraws into isolation.

While the world sees Thoko and Sindi as the perfect power couple, behind closed doors, things are far from blissful. Thoko’s heart isn’t in it. As Nana slowly heals, she finally closes the chapter on Thoko, sending her the completed manuscript. But Thoko isn’t ready to be a story of the past.

In a dramatic bookstore encounter, Thoko finally faces Nana again. The moment of truth arrives when Nana reveals her real identity. What happens next? That’s a story worth watching.

    Cast

Umjolo: There Is No Cure features exceptional actors like Londeka Sishi, Busisiwe Mtshali, Tina Redman, Nombulelo Mhlongo, Yonda Thomas, Sibongiseni Shezi, Tyson Mathonsi, and Felix Hlophe.

    Language

The movie was performed in Zulu.

    Summary

The Umjolo franchise has always delivered when it comes to aesthetics—a beautiful cast, stylish costumes, and an effortlessly cool vibe. But when it comes to the plot? Well, that’s where things get shaky. While the attempt at inclusivity is commendable, the film lacks that wow factor to truly stand out.

The first instalment, Umjolo: Gone Girl, set the bar high, offering a fresh and gripping narrative that kept audiences hooked. Maybe it was the novelty, or maybe it was just better storytelling, but the latest entry struggles to recapture that magic.

While longtime fans of the franchise might still enjoy the visual appeal and familiar themes, those hoping for a groundbreaking twist or a fresh take might walk away feeling underwhelmed. Umjolo: There Is No Cure is fun to watch but don’t expect to be surprised.

  • Ranking Every Davido Album From Worst To Best

Ranking Every Davido Album From Worst To Best

It feels like just yesterday when a teenage Davido burst onto our screens with Back When, marking the beginning of a legendary career. Over the years, he has released some of the most iconic Davido albums, shaping the Afrobeats genre.

The 001 of Afrobeats has cemented himself as one of the industry’s most consistent hitmakers, delivering banger after banger with reckless abandon. Yet, the veteran shows no signs of slowing down—his fifth studio album, 5ive, is set for release on March 14, 2025.

As we anticipate 5ive, we take a dive into his discography, ranking Davido albums from worst to best. From Omo Baba Olowo: The Genesis to Timeless, we revisit the music that secured his place in the Hall of Fame of Nigerian music.

    5. A Better Time (2020)

Worst Despite spurning smash hits like FEM, The Best, and Jowo, Davido’s third album, A Better Time, felt more like a compilation of potential hits than a cohesive body of work. In a year when his eternal rivals, Burna Boy and Wizkid, delivered groundbreaking albums with Twice as Tall and Made in Lagos, Davido failed to rise to the occasion. The album lacked a central theme as Davido relied on a hit-first approach that resulted in a 17-track album that delivered only a handful of satisfying records completely eclipsed by a majority of forgettable songs. The international features—Nicki Minaj, Lil Baby, and Nas—felt like forced additions aimed at commercial success rather than seamless collaborations. No song encapsulates how terrible this album is more than Birthday Cake with Nas, a horrible record that fell flat despite the legendary rapper’s presence. Overall, A Better Time lacked quality, failed to leave a lasting impact, and was quickly forgotten. Good riddance.

    4. Son of Mercy (2016) [EP]

In 2016, the Afrobeats to the World movement was in its infancy and Davido was one of the genre’s biggest names. With growing international demand and a lucrative recording contract with Sony Music in place, he released Son of Mercy, his major-label debut. In an attempt to appeal to an international audience still unfamiliar with the Nigerian Pop sound, Davido adopted a Western R&B/Pop sound which was a clear departure from his signature Afrobeats style. While songs like Gbagbe Oshi and Coolest Kid in Africa had their moments, the project ultimately lacked the X-factor needed to truly connect. Unfortunately, Son of Mercy failed to resonate with both his core fan base and the international audience he tried to impress, leaving the EP feeling inconsequential and—in Davido’s own words—sounding like shit.

    3. Omo Baba Olowo – The Genesis(2012)

Davido’s career is synonymous with hit songs and his debut album delivered a number of them. Records like Dami Duro, Ekuro, All of You, and Overseas laid the foundation for his incredible career and still continue to thrill longtime fans and new audiences to this day. The album showcases the relentless energy of a teenage but highly ambitious Davido who basks in the glory of newfound fame and fortune, resulting in a celebratory debut. While Omo Baba Olowo had its flaws—its songwriting left much to be desired and his vocals needed training—the album has aged well and remains both relevant and enjoyable. A testament to Davido’s undeniable ability to craft music that stands the test of time.

    2. Timeless (2023)

After what seemed like a long hiatus following the unfortunate passing of his son, Davido made a strong comeback with Timeless, showing growth and maturity as he refined the flaws of his previous albums to deliver his most polished and seamless body of work yet. Songs like Unavailable, Kante, No Competition, and Feel became instant fan favourites while records like Na Money, Godfather, and LCND have all aged like fine wine. The album sells well two years after its release, solidifying its place as Davido’s most defining work.

    1. A Good Time (2019)

A Good Time is easily Davido’s most complete and impressive album. As the name implies, Davido delivered on his promise of A Good Time while providing a vivid image of his journey to becoming one of Africa’s biggest pop stars. With songs like Blow My Mind, Risky, Sweet in the Middle, Disturbance, Big Picture, and D&G, the album delivered multiple hits while still feeling well-curated. A Good Time is the offering of an artist who has consistently fine-tuned his craft and removed the rough edges that once held his music back. The result is a fully clear vision for the future of his artistry, buoyant and undeniably infectious. A Good Time stands as one of Afrobeats’ finest albums and is a testament to Davido’s unwavering resolve to continue evolving. It is without doubt the best Davido album of all time.

  • Mavin Records To Lead Universal Music Group’s Operations In Nigeria

Mavin Records To Lead Universal Music Group’s Operations In Nigeria

Mavin Records, one of Africa’s most influential music companies, is set to play a bigger role in Universal Music Group’s (UMG) expansion strategy. According to UMG CEO Sir Lucian Grainge’s recent New Year memo, Mavin will now oversee all of UMG’s business in Nigeria, solidifying the label’s influence in the region.

The move comes as UMG continues its strategic push into emerging markets, with Nigeria recognized as a key territory alongside China, India, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand. Grainge highlighted Mavin’s importance in this expansion, stating:  “And we grew our geographic footprint. One example: our partnering with and investing in Mavin Global, whose founders Don Jazzy and Tega Oghenejobo continue to lead that company as well as, going forward, all of UMG’s business in Nigeria.”

READ MORE: Here’s The Strategic Move Mavin Records Needs To Take

This shift follows UMG’s decision last year to account for its investment in Mavin as a business combination, meaning that Mavin’s financials—including assets, liabilities, revenues, and expenses—are now fully integrated into UMG’s reports.

The announcement also comes after Tega Oghenejobo stepped into his new role as President and COO of Mavin Records in October 2024, marking a significant leadership transition within the company.

With Mavin leading UMG’s Nigerian operations, the partnership signals a deepened commitment to Africa’s booming music industry. This move could also set the stage for increased investment, artist development, and global expansion opportunities for Nigerian talent under the UMG umbrella.

Warner Music Group (WMG) has officially completed its acquisition of Africori, a leading African digital music distribution, rights management, and label services company. This move follows Warner’s majority stake purchase in the company in 2022.

The company currently represents over 7,000 artists, including notable names such as Kelvin Momo, Master KG, Nkosazana Daughter, Oscar Mbo, and TitoM and Yuppe.

Kenan expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “We’ve had an incredibly successful few years partnering with Temi Adeniji and Warner Music. The Africori team looks forward to working with the entire Warner Music family as we discover, develop, and upstream the next generation of talent from across the continent.”

Raenest Secures $11 Million Series A Funding To Expand Into US And Egypt

Raenest, a Nigerian fintech startup offering multi-currency accounts for individuals and businesses across Africa, has raised $11 million in a Series A funding round to fuel its expansion into the United States and Egypt. The round was led by QED Investors, with additional backing from Norrsken22, Ventures Platform, P1 Ventures, and Seedstars. This latest investment brings Raenest’s total funding to $14.3 million.

With the fresh capital injection, Raenest aims to strengthen its footprint in Nigeria and Kenya while entering new markets in the US and Egypt. The company is committed to enhancing financial accessibility for Africans both on the continent and in the diaspora, easing cross-border transactions and providing seamless international banking services. “This funding, supported by new and existing investors who share our mission, provides the momentum to scale our solutions and expand our impact across the continent,” said Victor Alade, CEO of Raenest. “We are excited to continue building solutions that connect Africa to the world and drive inclusive growth and prosperity.”

The funding milestone comes just seven months after Raenest received approval from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to operate as an International Money Transfer Operator (IMTO), facilitating cross-border payments. The company also holds a Money Services Business (MSB) license in Canada and is actively pursuing additional regulatory approvals in key international markets. To support its expansion, Raenest has already established partnerships with major banks in the United States and the United Kingdom, ensuring stability and reliability in its financial operations.

Founded in 2022 by Victor Alade, Sodruldeen Mustapha, and Richard Oyome, Raenest initially started as an Employer of Record (EOR) before transitioning into a fintech platform focused on modernising global banking for Africans. The company provides businesses and freelancers with multi-currency wallets, global bank accounts, and physical and virtual dollar cards, enabling seamless international transactions in USD, EUR, and GBP. Since its inception, Raenest has gained significant traction, amassing over 700,000 users and processing more than $1 billion in payments. It serves more than 300 businesses, including Moniepoint, Helium Health, Fez Delivery, and Matta.

One of its flagship products, Geegpay, caters to Africa’s growing gig economy by allowing freelancers, remote workers, content creators, and solopreneurs to receive payments from platforms like Upwork, Fiverr, and Gusto while minimising transaction fees. With the global cross-border payments industry projected to reach $320 trillion by 2032, Raenest is positioning itself to tap into Africa’s fast-growing financial services sector. The latest funding round will help the company scale its solutions, attract top talent, and cement its presence in new markets.

Kola Aina, Founder and General Partner at Ventures Platform, praised Raenest’s commitment to Africa’s gig economy and businesses, expressing confidence in its ability to scale and create meaningful impact in the fintech space. Gbenga Ajayi, Partner and Head of Africa and the Middle East at QED Investors, echoed this sentiment, stating, “At QED, we firmly believe that by bridging the gap between local and global markets, Raenest will unlock new opportunities for African entrepreneurs, freelancers, and businesses, ultimately driving greater economic empowerment across the continent.” As Raenest continues to expand, the fintech firm is set to play a critical role in shaping Africa’s digital financial landscape while enabling greater financial inclusion on a global scale.

  • A Night In 2005 Movie Review: A Riveting Tale Of Trauma, Power, And Justice

A Night In 2005 Movie Review: A Riveting Tale Of Trauma, Power, And Justice

In A Night in 2005, director Temidayo Makanjuola crafts a deeply emotional and socially relevant drama that explores the long-lasting impact of trauma, the complexities of family loyalty, and the pursuit of justice in a society riddled with power dynamics. A Night in 2005 follows the story of a young woman, tormented by a painful secret from her past, who musters the strength to stand against formidable forces and discovers that justice can take many forms.

    Plot

The story of A Night In 2005 follows Ife, a woman haunted by a traumatic experience from a prom afterparty in 2005. Now in her 30s and engaged to her long-time partner Paul, Ife struggles with intimacy and happiness, unable to fully embrace her future due to the unresolved pain of being raped at 17. Seeking a fresh start, she returns to Nigeria after years of living abroad, but coming back proves to be more emotionally draining than she anticipated.

The memories of her past come flooding back, especially when she realises that Opeyemi Dada, the man who assaulted her, is now a prominent politician making headlines daily. He is running for governor of Lagos State, and according to the media, he is a model of integrity—squeaky clean and beloved by the people. However, behind closed doors, Dada harbours dark secrets he has spent years desperately trying to hide.

As Ife struggles with the overwhelming emotions stirred by her return, her mother, Yetide, is focused on elevating her social status. Desperate to mingle with Lagos’ elite, including Dada’s mother, Yetide disregards her daughter’s pain and sends her to her late father’s village to sell a family farm to cover his lingering debts. The journey to the village presents another emotional battle for Ife, as she is initially met with hostility from her granduncle. However, as time passes, he softens toward her, revealing long-buried family connections and offering a different kind of solace from the chaos she left behind in Lagos.

Meanwhile, back in the city, Opeyemi Dada finds himself on the verge of losing control. While he projects an image of an upstanding politician, rumours of his past misdeeds begin to surface, threatening his carefully curated reputation. His wife, Kelechi, starts to sense that her husband is not as honest as she once believed. With growing suspicion and rumours of scandal spreading, Dada is trapped in a relentless struggle to suppress the truth.

Ife’s quest for justice is met with resistance, not just from the powerful forces shielding him but from an unexpected betrayal—her own mother. As the story unfolds, it becomes known that Yetide had long known about the incident but chose to protect Opeyemi, valuing social standing and alliances over her daughter’s well-being.

With unwavering determination, Ife refuses to be silenced. She takes her fight to social media, where her story gains traction, sparking a movement that challenges both Opeyemi’s public image and the complicity of those who enabled him. However, for Dada, the walls begin to close in. As public scrutiny intensifies and the truth about his past crimes starts to unravel, he becomes increasingly ruthless in his attempts to squash the allegations.

As his campaign reaches a critical point, he becomes increasingly desperate, resorting to drastic measures to silence those who might expose him. But Ife doesn’t stop at just seeking justice—she also wants revenge. Tired of being powerless, she decides to take matters into her own hands, using every resource available to ensure that Dada pays for what he did, including forming alliances with people she least expected. As his secrets continue to unravel, his world begins to collapse, and he is forced to confront the consequences of his actions most unexpectedly and brutally.

    Cast

The emotional weight of the film was carried by Ini Dima-Okojie’s masterful performance, portraying Ife’s pain, anger, and eventual empowerment with raw authenticity. Her performance is compelling, as she seamlessly transitions from a distraught and broken woman to one who finds glimpses of healing and genuine happiness.

Efa Iwara delivers a chillingly nuanced portrayal of Opeyemi, embodying the charisma of a public figure who hides a sinister past. His performance, particularly in the final scene, is hauntingly convincing—his burst of emotion is raw and deeply unsettling, making for a gripping and believable climax.

Uzoamaka Aniunoh delivered a strong and measured performance—her emotions were raw yet restrained, making every moment feel authentic without the need for exaggeration. Olaiya Aderupoko’s portrayal of Baba was strikingly real, leaving an unforgettable impression.

Other standout performances came from Ireti Doyle, Bimbo Akintola, Demi Banwo, Susan Pwajok, Taye Arimoro, Modesinuola Ogundiwin, Laura Pepple, Daniella Peters, and more, each adding depth and richness to the film.

    Language

A Night In 2005 was performed in English.

    Summary

Visually, A Night in 2005 is breathtaking, with cinematography that seamlessly contrasts the warm, earthy tones of the rural farm with the stark, cool hues of the city’s political landscape.

The film maintained a focused narrative, striking a balance between originality and familiarity without veering off course. The performances were captivating, and the film’s message was both morally profound and commendably executed.

However, the pacing stumbles slightly during the transition from Ife’s urban life to her uncle’s farm. The shift in setting feels somewhat abrupt, momentarily disrupting the narrative flow. A more seamless integration of this transition could have enhanced the film’s overall cohesion.

  • Love Reset Movie Review:  A Tale Of Tragedy, Deceit, And Rediscovered Love

Love Reset Movie Review:  A Tale Of Tragedy, Deceit, And Rediscovered Love

Omoni Oboli TV presents Love Reset, a compelling love story born from tragedy and deception. Directed by Uzo Osimkpa, the film follows the journey of a young woman who suffers a traumatic accident, resulting in retrograde amnesia. Unaware of her past, she finds herself engaged to the very person responsible for the accident. However, as fate would have it, a figure from her past emerges, challenging everything she believes to be true.

    Plot

The story kicks off with Yemi, a well-known public figure, embroiled in a heated argument with his girlfriend, Tonia. Desperate to break up after five years together, Yemi’s decision pushes Tonia to the edge—literally. In a fit of rage, she intentionally crashes their car into another vehicle. The crash results in the tragic death of the driver, while the passenger, a young woman, survives but suffers retrograde amnesia, leaving her with no memory of her past.

Determined to protect his reputation, Yemi—with the help of his influential father, Alhaji—covers up the accident. He searches for any trace of the woman’s identity but, upon finding none, takes matters into his own hands. Giving her a new identity as “Fifekemi,” he brings her into his home, introduces her to his cousin and maid, and erases all traces of the tragic past. Meanwhile, he finally cuts ties with Tricia.

Fast forward three years, Fifekemi and Yemi are now in a relationship, and in front of a nationwide audience, he proposes. However, Fifekemi’s hesitant reaction foreshadows the storm brewing beneath the surface. As wedding preparations begin, they hire an event planner, Cheta. From their very first meeting, sparks fly—Cheta is visibly shaken upon seeing Kemi, and she, too, feels an inexplicable connection. With each encounter, the chemistry between them grows stronger, igniting a passion neither can ignore.

But secrets have a way of surfacing. A private investigator hired by Tonia catches Kemi and Cheta in a compromising moment, and Yemi’s ever-watchful maid soon uncovers the affair. As the evidence piles up, Yemi’s cousin wastes no time in reporting back to him. When Yemi receives the damning photos, he snaps. In a terrifying turn of events, he ties Kemi up, tortures her, and finally confesses—he was responsible for the accident that erased her past.

Meanwhile, Tonia and Cheta race against time, speeding toward Yemi’s house. Along the way, Tricia drops a bombshell: Yemi has a long history of abusing women, and she was one of his victims. In a shocking twist, she reveals that Yemi’s maid was planted for Kemi’s protection, as she is the daughter of a retired soldier.

As Yemi prepares to unleash his fury on Fifekemi, the maid intervenes just in time, revealing that everything has been secretly recorded. A struggle for the gun ensues, and in the chaos, Fifekemi is accidentally shot.

In the hospital, with Cheta by her side, Cheta unveils an even deeper truth—one that not only sheds light on her forgotten past but could also change the course of her future forever.

    Cast

Ego Nwosu as Fifekemi, Eso Dike as Cheta, Taye Arimoro as Tonia, Derby Frankson as Kofi and Bless Fortune as Kiki.

    Language

The Nollywood romantic drama Love Reset was performed in English.

    Summary

While Love Reset offers an intriguing storyline—one that stands out slightly from the usual YouTube movie formula—the film ultimately struggles with execution, making it feel all too familiar in its delivery.

One of the most glaring issues in the movie is its continuity. The transition from Fifekemi moving into Yemi’s home to his sudden proposal three years later feels jarring and poorly executed. With no clear passage of time and Yemi even wearing the same outfit, the audience is left confused, wondering, Did I miss something?

READ MORE: Popular African TV Series That Dominated The 2000s & 2010s

The film’s climax, meant to be thrilling, veers into the realm of the overly dramatic and unrealistic. The maid’s sudden transformation from a weird maid to an undercover agent with a backstory of her own feels forced and out of place. The reveal lacks buildup, making it hard to buy into. Similarly, the inexplicable partnership between Tonia and Cheta—two characters with no prior connection—feels like a stretch. Also, how does someone who recklessly crashed into your car and caused your amnesia suddenly become a trusted ally? It simply doesn’t add up.

Another questionable aspect is the repeated mention of Yemi’s father, Alhaji, who is painted as a powerful figure yet never actually appears in the film. If he was meant to have such an influence on the story, why omit his visual presence entirely?

Overall, Love Reset had the potential to be a gripping drama but falters due to choppy editing, forced plot twists, and underwhelming execution. It almost feels like parts of the film were either forgotten or cut out entirely during production, leaving behind a story that doesn’t fully connect the dots.

  • Meta To Lay Off About 100 Employees In Africa As Part Of 3,000 Global Cuts

Meta To Lay Off About 100 Employees In Africa As Part Of 3,000 Global Cuts

Meta is set to lay off 3,000 employees across Africa, Europe, and Asia, starting today, Monday, February 10, 2024. The company has confirmed it will begin notifying affected staff, with notices rolling out from 5 a.m. local time in many countries. While employees in Germany, France, Italy, and the Netherlands will remain unaffected due to strict local labor laws, workers in other parts of Europe, Asia, and Africa could face uncertainty over the coming days, with the layoffs expected to extend through February 18.

The latest round of cuts comes as part of Meta’s ongoing effort to streamline its workforce, with the company specifically targeting its “lowest performers.” According to an internal memo obtained by Reuters, Janelle Gale, Meta’s Head of People, referred to these reductions as “performance terminations,” signalling a shift from the broad, sweeping layoffs that defined earlier rounds. This time, Meta is avoiding major office closures or public announcements in an effort to downplay the impact.

Though Meta is letting go of a significant number of employees, it is simultaneously ramping up hiring in key areas, especially machine learning engineers and other essential engineering roles. Peng Fan, VP of Engineering for Monetization, sent out a separate memo urging staff to expedite hiring between February 11 and March 13, making it clear that AI-focused roles will be a top priority moving forward.

In Africa, Meta’s downsizing has been particularly noticeable in Nigeria. Last June, the company quietly reduced its office space in Lagos after laying off at least 35 employees, including its entire Nigerian engineering team. While the company initially described this as part of a routine real estate review, it now seems more like a strategic retrenchment from local operations. Though it’s still unclear how many Nigerians will be impacted by this latest round of layoffs, the trend suggests that the region is once again facing significant job cuts.

Meta’s focus on AI as its main growth driver for 2025 highlights the company’s pivot toward more automated, data-driven operations. As layoffs and hiring efforts collide, the shifting landscape at Meta continues to raise questions about the future of its workforce, particularly in regions like Africa, where the company’s presence is shrinking.

For many employees, especially those in Africa, the uncertainty surrounding these layoffs underscores a larger, ongoing trend of contraction that could signal a long-term reduction in Meta’s commitment to the region. The coming weeks may provide more clarity on how deeply the cuts will affect operations in Africa, as well as the future of Meta’s local workforce.

  • Qing Madi – I Am The Blueprint Album Review: Decent Debut

Qing Madi – I Am The Blueprint Album Review: Decent Debut

When Qing Madi burst into the scene with See Finish, it was clear that the teenager was destined for incredible things. Her self-titled debut EP was a brilliant showcase of her vocal range and songwriting ability. The EP seemed tailored to a niche teenage audience as Madi spoke to the sensibilities of her generation, whether she was discussing her ambitions or romance.

A little over a year since her debut EP, Qing Madi has cemented her place as one of Africa’s finest young talents, and even the sky doesn’t seem to be the limit for her. Her debut album, I Am The Blueprint, reflects her confidence, self-assurance and youthful audacity as she refuses to be defined by others, asserting her identity and artistic vision with the belief that she is creating a template and setting a standard for her generation to follow.

She documents her lofty dreams on the opener Bucket List, an introspective yet ambitious anthem that reflects her dreams, determination, and belief in her destiny. The song blends self-affirmation with a deep desire for success, as she acknowledges the long journey ahead while remaining confident in her potential. Her bucket list is full of dreams—winning a Grammy, building an empire, and buying her mother a mansion. The song relates her desire to make a lasting impact.

While her confidence is sky-high, Madi still contends with internal battles as she reveals on Pressure. These internal battles could arise from doubts, pressure, past mistakes, and the weight of personal struggles. While she acknowledges her struggles, she seems pretty unconcerned as she relies on God for hope and redemption, putting trust in God and letting go of battles that are beyond her control.

While Qing Madi has said in multiple interviews that she has yet to have a romantic experience, romance makes for a significant chunk of this album. She lets her imagination run wild as she explores romance and its complexities on the album.

The Prestige-produced Ali Bomaye is a soulful song that expresses deep gratitude and love for a significant other. The song captures the essence of finding solace in love amidst life’s chaos. Its infectious rhythm makes for a satisfying listen, but the writing on the hook is lazy.

While it’s clear Qing Madi wants to create accessible and resonant hooks on this album to appeal to a broader audience, her talent suggests she’s capable of crafting far more compelling hooks than this.

On the bouncy Afropop Akanchawa laced with infectious strings, the singer expresses a willingness to give everything for the person who has captured her heart. She is so drawn to them that she is willing to set aside her ego, indicating a deep emotional connection.

She repeats similar sentiments in the passionate and playful Goosebumps, where she expresses deep attraction and admiration for her love interest. Qing Madi delivers a vibrant and rhythmic record that reflects the excitement of being infatuated with someone as she sings, “I get a lot of goosebumps when I’m with you”.

Qing Madi balances the vibrant and exciting aspects of romance with a candid portrayal of its darker, more troubled dimensions. Favorite Psycho is a deeply compelling and moving R&B number where she passionately sings about a complicated situation where deep emotions are intertwined with heartbreak and loyalty. It’s a heartfelt portrayal of someone caught in the emotional chaos of a difficult relationship as well as a cautionary tale about the dangers of blind loyalty and the need for people to place more value on themselves. It’s the best song on the album.

It’s a Game is a close second on the list of best songs on this album. Madi talks about being manipulated in a relationship, which eventually leads to questions being asked about the true intentions of her love interest. Qing Madi’s delivery conveys the pain of betrayal as Wademix crafts a minimalistic yet atmospheric beat driven by chilling chords and mild kicks. Garden is a soft and deeply intimate record aided by its melodic delivery and heartfelt lyrics. Garden in this context represents a safe space where love can flourish, free from doubts and fear. A minute with me in the garden / So, won’t you gimme just a one chance, chargie she sings.

While the album is really good, its Achilles heel is its heavy reliance on a narrow range of sounds and production, which results in a lack of sonic depth. Many songs on the album have the same tempo, energy and mood.

The album follows a predictable structure with no twists to keep listeners engaged. This is where a handful of features would have been necessary to deliver the variety the album sorely needed.

When an album maintains the same sound and tempo, it can create a sense of monotony, which can make potentially great songs sound intolerable. Records like Gimme Your Love, One Day, Right Here and Feeling Alright, which may have been enjoyable songs in a different context, make for a tedious listen due to the similarities they share with most of the other songs on the album.

Despite these flaws, Qing Madi can hold her head high and be proud of herself. Debut albums are by far the hardest to pull off, especially when you’ve enjoyed success like she has in the last year. Overall, it is a satisfactory debut offering from a teenager who is still finding herself. This writer is excited for her.

  • Is Afrobeats Pushing Creative Boundaries In 2025?

Is Afrobeats Pushing Creative Boundaries In 2025?

Cruel Santino has been active on X lately, and his recent tweets have drawn some attention. The Alté frontman’s resurgent social media activity seems to be partly triggered by the brutal criticism of the Alté movement by Nigerian journalist Joey Akan.

In one of his latest tweets, Santino raises concerns about the creative progression of Nigerian music (read: Afrobeats) since its meteoric rise to international acclaim and the accompanying influx of Western investment.

While some may have been quick to dismiss Santino’s comments, a closer look reveals a perspective that should be considered. His concerns about the genre’s lack of creative progression and its connection to commercial success deserve attention.

Afrobeats has taken the world by storm, with chart-topping hits and collaborations with internationally acclaimed superstars. The genre’s popularity can be attributed to the large Nigerian diaspora, a seemingly insatiable demand for Nigerian music, and the diversification of the global music landscape.

However, beneath Afrobeats’ widespread international acclaim lies a concern about its creative progression and evolution. There is a severe lack of innovation, which threatens to stifle the genre’s international acclaim.

The prolonged reliance on Amapiano is an indicator that most artists would rather adopt what is working than create something new. While Amapiano added a fresh dimension to Afrobeats, the sound eventually became stale, with many artists repeating the same formulas to score hit songs. What’s even more alarming is that many artists failed to recognise the audience’s growing fatigue with Amapiano’s familiar sound and their craving for something new.

The rise of emerging artists adopting the styles of established acts like Rema, Victony, and Omah Lay is another worrying trend. There is an unfortunate abundance of clones and copycats, especially among new artists. This suggests that many emerging artists are prioritising commercial success over authenticity and originality. While the music is commercially viable, it lacks the creative spark needed to push Afrobeats forward.

Fortunately, there are exceptions. Rema’s 2024 album HEIS is a bold example of Afrobeats’ creative potential, combining Afropop with hyperpop and rock. Ayra Starr’s sophomore album also incorporates a range of sounds, including reggae, pop, R&B, folk, and ballads. These artists are driving the genre forward, but they remain in the minority.

A significant number of artists continue to rely on familiar styles and formulas, which threatens the long-term sustainability of Afrobeats. If the genre does not continue to evolve, the West will eventually move on to the next big thing.

READ MORE: Burna Boy: Why Stage Crashing Needs To Stop In The Afrobeats Ecosystem

So, how can Afrobeats progress creatively? The key lies in experimentation. Artists must be willing to take risks and explore new sounds. The genre has proven to be malleable, and incorporating elements from other styles is a way forward. Fans must also be open to experimentation from their favourite artists. This means embracing new sounds and styles even if they don’t resonate immediately. A prime example is the initial reception of HEIS.

The album was met with scepticism and harsh criticism on X upon its release. However, as time passed, its innovative nature and Rema’s bold artistic vision won people over. This highlights the importance of giving artists the freedom to experiment rather than judging their work solely based on previous releases or first impressions.

Revisiting traditional music styles and exploring Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage can also contribute to Afrobeats’ growth. While there has been a notable increase in artists exploring their indigenous influences, there’s a range of unconventional and traditional Nigerian instruments, sounds and styles yet to be explored and a wealth of sonic inspiration waiting to be tapped. By diving deeper into this cultural treasure trove, artists can not only uncover new sounds but also showcase the incredible diversity and creativity of Nigerian music.

We must also explore the rich musical heritage of Africa. The success of Amapiano, a genre from South Africa, demonstrates the potential for cross-cultural exchange and innovation. Yet, we’ve barely scratched the surface of the musical wealth that exists from Central to Northern Africa. By exploring these untapped sounds, we can also add depth and complexity to our music and also mine the musical gold we have at our disposal.

For Afrobeats to maintain its global success, prioritising experimentation and innovation is crucial. The future of the genre depends on its ability to keep evolving, and it is up to artists and producers to drive this creative progression. The future of Afrobeats isn’t just in its commercial success—it’s in its ability to remain fresh, bold and daring.

Kash Money Review:  A Chaotic Misfire That Should Have Stayed On Pape

Insignia Productions delivers a Kenyan mini-series, Kash Money, directed by Philippe Breeson. This drama follows a ruthless kingpin who built his empire on blood, power, and unshakeable ambition. But with every rise comes a fall, and his past sins soon come knocking. Surrounded by enemies lurking in the shadows, his empire begins to crumble when he dies, devoured by those who once swore loyalty. Will he outmanoeuvre his foes, or will his legacy be lost to the vultures?

    Plot

At the heart of it all is Joe Njenga—a wealthy man with a daughter, a new wife, and a ruthless desire to expand his empire. But behind the glitz and glamour, the Njengas are anything but ordinary.

Blinded by greed, Joe murders a landowner to secure prime property for an upcoming motorway, aided by a corrupt governor who ties their shady deal to an arranged marriage between her son, Shadrack, and Joe’s daughter, Kate. But Kate has no interest in this scheme—she dreams of building a textile empire, much to her father’s disapproval. Meanwhile, she harbours a secret affair, only for Joe to catch them in the act—revealing a horrifying truth: her lover, Njagi, is her cousin.

Joe’s wife, Gina, has her own skeletons in the closet, including a dangerously obsessed lover who will stop at nothing to claim her. When she unexpectedly falls pregnant, the question is not about who the father is but how she is going to use the unborn child as leverage.

Then there’s Christian—a man haunted by a criminal past and raising a daughter under the watchful eye of his aunt. His world shatters when ruthless men from his past force him into a deadly ultimatum: assassinate Joe Njenga or lose his child. But just as he prepares to pull the trigger, he discovers someone else got to Joe first. The real shocker? Joe was his father all along.

With Joe dead, his empire is ripe for the taking, and his last will sends shockwaves through the family. Against all odds, the bulk of his fortune goes to his newly discovered son, Christian—setting off a war for power. Bitter enemies Gina and Kate suddenly find common ground in their greed, joining forces to crush Christian. But as alliances shift and betrayals unfold, one thing is clear: a familiar face has been playing everyone, hiding in plain sight. And this snake in the grass is not just a deceiver but a killer.

    Cast

Kash Money features Amara Tari, Sanaipei Tande, John Sibi-Okumu, Janet Mbugua, Morris Mwangi, Oliver Litondo, Lenana Kariba, Shiv Singh, Dedan Juma, and many more.

Unfortunately, what should have been a compelling drama feels disappointingly hollow.

The performances lack depth, making it painfully obvious that the actors merely recite lines rather than embodying their characters. The chemistry is nonexistent, the emotional weight feels forced, and the entire production suffers from a lack of authenticity. Whether this is due to weak scriptwriting, uninspired direction, or simply a lack of passion from the cast is anyone’s guess—but the result is an underwhelming viewing experience that fails to live up to its potential.

For a series that revolves around crime, betrayal, and high-stakes drama, Kash Money should have been gripping. Instead, it struggles to make an impact, leaving audiences detached from the story and its characters.

    Language

Kash Money was performed in Swahili, Sheng, and English.

    Summary

From the plot to the costumes, cast, and overall production, Kash Money falls embarrassingly short of expectations. It’s hard to say which was worse—the flimsy storyline or the lousy film poster.

Right from the first episode, the series tries to do too much too soon, bombarding viewers with an overload of characters, rushed subplots, and excessive gunfire that adds nothing to the story. The trend of introducing every major character in the first episode needs to stop—especially when it results in a jumbled mess rather than a gripping setup.

READ MORE: Shanty Town Review: Crisp And Violence, To What End?

Adding to the confusion is an awkward narration by the old man referred to as “Grandpa”—telling children a bizarre, poorly constructed tale. At first, it’s unclear whether he’s recounting the actual chaos of the show (filled with shootings, kinky sex, incest, and unnecessary profanity) or just a random folktale about a trickster in a forest. Either way, it’s a weak and lazy attempt at giving the series a unique twist.

By the time the series reaches its climax, it becomes clear that Kash Money is never really going anywhere. Joe’s murder of the landowner is left unresolved, characters make cryptic, meaningless statements like “Phase 1 has been completed,” and subplots—such as the Governor and her son—are so underdeveloped they might as well not exist. Even the last-minute poison-laced wine scene feels like a desperate attempt to add intrigue where there is none.

Ultimately, Kash Money is a disjointed, poorly executed project that never finds its footing. If a second season is in the works, it’s already signing up for failure. Some stories are better left in the writer’s head—and this was definitely one of them.

  • Here Are 3 Proven Strategies Afrobeats Music Executives Should Try In 2025

Here Are 3 Proven Strategies Afrobeats Music Executives Should Try In 2025

The Afrobeats ecosystem has never been as stiff and competitive as it is today. The pressure to break new artists, build the fanbase of emerging talent, maintain the trajectory of established artists, and consistently generate revenue from catalogues remains the reality for the creative and daring souls working behind the scenes in our multi-billion-dollar industry. Now more than ever, an artist’s or label’s success is not measured solely by the sonic prowess displayed in their records but by the hit songs they produce. Often, this success is gauged by likely inflated streaming numbers, politically and fundamentally flawed awards, and highly exaggerated ticket sales in a bid to join the “sold-out” gang.

Yet, at the centre of this are artists who do not resist the urge to hastily denounce Afrobeats at any given opportunity on the global stage, as well as ongoing conflicts between artists, labels, music executives, artist beefs, and fan wars. While it is true that the good, the bad, and the ugly have all contributed positively—at least from the perspective of Afrobeats PR, growth, and global dominance—it has not been without challenges.

As we continue to push for global dominance in 2025, here are a few strategies Afrobeats music executives should try:

    1. Creative Samples

Before Tems’ Love Me Jeje won the Best African Music Performance category at the 67th Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, Afrobeats artists had been sampling records. While most of these attempts fail to achieve success, quite a few have thrived. Burna Boy—without downplaying his creativity—has been the king of samples, having drawn inspiration from African legends like Fela Kuti and The Afrika 70 on Ye, as well as non-African artists like Toni Braxton on Last Last and Jeremih on City Boys, among others. Other artists like Darkoo, Wizkid, and Davido have also sampled legendary African musicians in their songs.

Nostalgia will always remain a marketing currency in pop culture. This is why remixes, prefixes, and covers continue to excel in today’s world. It also explains why a sample snippet from Rema is currently the most anticipated song of 2025, with over 8.4 million views on Instagram—surpassing his 3.5 million average on other reels—and over 86,000 user-generated reels from the snippet. One of the 32,000 comments on the Is It a Crime? snippet, originally performed by Sade in 1985, from @purple_pastry reads, “It is actually a crime that you have not still dropped this jam!!!!! Ah ah, what is it??! Must we beg you like this?” This not only validates the commercial viability of creative samples in 2025 but also highlights the cultural impact of sampling classic Afrobeats records.

While sampling foreign records is essential for growth—especially for artists looking to break into new categories—sampling classic Afrobeats records not only provides a ready-made hit song but also introduces a growing fanbase to the roots of the genre the world can’t seem to get enough of.

    2. Joint Projects and Tours

We know the power of collaboration. It’s like crossbreeding two genetically different animals to create a unique and new breed. This strategy has fuelled the success of many stars today. Whether it involves artists of different levels or those on the same level, the result in most cases is the same—success. But what if we go beyond collaborating on just a song? What if we extend it to full projects and tours?

Last year, Ruger and BNXN, under Empire, delivered one of the best joint projects in recent years with RnB. Beyond its commercial success, its sonic dexterity is something we’ll always be proud of. These are evergreen records that could easily be sampled and/or interpolated in years to come due to their musical depth.

    3. Popularizing Traditional/Folk Music

Artists can either sample traditional music—such as Fuji, Highlife, Juju, and more—or create pop versions of these genres. The most financially buoyant fans in the industry today are in their early 30s to late 50s. These are the people who can afford to purchase tables, VVIP tickets, and other premium experiences. They are the ones funding the industry in every sense. Many of them were raised on folk music, and as we know, while we often vibe to popular music in our 20s, we tend to switch back to traditional music in our 30s.

What if there was a bridge—a blend of both eras? We’ve seen this with Shallipopi’s Obapluto and even his recent snippet Laho, which is already gaining traction on social media as a fusion of Afrobeats and traditional music. Recently, Brain Jotter’s social media content revived Mike Ejeagha’s Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche, which currently has over 1.2 million streams on Spotify. Additionally, FirstKlaz is off to a great start in his career by collaborating with the Arewa music band Iliya Entertainment Music—further proving that folk music has room to thrive in 2025, especially if it can be popularised.
