Why 2027 will be the most consequential election Nigeria has ever had — a data-heavy breakdown

I’ve spent the last three weeks pulling together voter registration data, polling from four different sources, and demographic shifts since 2023. The picture that emerges is genuinely different from what mainstream coverage suggests.

Three things matter more than the headlines are giving them credit for. First, the youth vote is not what it was in 2023. INEC’s own registration data shows a sharp increase in the 18-30 bracket, concentrated overwhelmingly in the South West and Middle Belt. Second, the naira crisis has scrambled traditional voting patterns in ways that don’t map neatly onto any party’s existing base. And third — the one nobody is talking about — the diaspora vote question is finally going to be tested at scale.

Let me take each in turn. The youth registration numbers are unambiguous: Lagos alone added hundreds of thousands of new registrations in the 18-30 bracket since 2023. These are not marginal changes, and any analysis that doesn’t account for them is working from an outdated map.

The diaspora point is under-covered, glad you raised it.
