Raising bilingual kids across two cultures — what actually worked after three years of trying
Started with a strict ‘one parent, one language’ rule that fell apart within months. What replaced it worked far better, and I wish someone had told me sooner.
The rigid version failed because real family life doesn’t respect rules that clean — grandparents visit, kids go to school in one language all day, and suddenly the ‘rule’ feels like a chore rather than a norm. What worked instead was flooding specific contexts (meals, bedtime, car rides) with the minority language consistently, rather than trying to police every interaction.
Three years in, both kids code-switch without thinking about it, which was the actual goal all along.
